May's Newsletter, I discussed what the Y2K problem was, In June,
how you could be affected. This month - How to try to
protect your business.
Awareness
1.
Define the Y2K issue and the potential impact on the business
2.
Outline objectives for compliance, general strategy, and timeline.
3.
Create a Y2K team to lead and coordinate efforts
Survey
1.
Conduct an inventory of all computers, software, equipment
inventory, preventive maintenance lists, and vendor service
contracts.
2.
Identify potential computer and building systems, and equipment
at risk for the Y2K problem.
3.
For each computer, software, and piece of equipment assess the
risk of the Y2K failure and the impact on the organization of
the failure.
Strategy
1.
Rank the risks and impact on the organization from high
to low.
2.
Develop a solution for each system. Assign in-house engineers,
technicians, or power users to develop a solution.
3.
Determine the cost of the solutions
4.
Prepare an overall plan and budget for Y2K redemption

Software tips of the month
Backup Corruption with Backup Exec
If your firm is using Backup Exec for Windows NT, Seagate Software
has issued a patch to fix a problem that created an unrestorable
backup set if a corrupt file were encountered. It would
fail for any file past the corrupt one. That patch now skips
the corrupt file. You can obtain the patch at http://www.seagatesoftware.com/bewinnt/updates.
