Speaker Hastert's Statement on Locking Away More
Money for Social Security and Medicare than the President

March 3, 1999

   House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert today released the following statement on the accomplishments of the Republican Congress, specifically the fact that the Republican budget locks away more money for Social Security and Medicare than the President's budget does.

Both the Senate and the House have passed resolutions supporting our troops as they embark on this dangerous mission. No one should doubt the resolve of the American people throughout this crisis.

"As we express concern for our troops, we also want you to know we are working hard to secure America's future. I want to say a few brief words about our budget proposals in the House and Senate.       "We're proud our budget locks away more money for both Social Security and Medicare than the President does – nearly $200 billion more over five years. By locking away 100% of the Retirement Surplus to strengthen both Social Security and Medicare, we will provide a more secure retirement future for today's senior citizens, tomorrow's baby boomers, and future generations. "We're equally proud of the fact that the nation's largest senior citizen organization, AARP, has come out with a supportive letter on our budget. "We all realize that by locking away more money for Social Security and Medicare than the President, we'll be better able to:

  • Strengthen Retirement Security for today and tomorrow;
  • Pay Down the Debt so our kids aren't stuck with our tab; and,
  • Keep the Budget Balanced by holding the line on wasteful Washington spending."
